There are approx. one million people working in healthcare sector in NRW, where the industry is regarded as the no. 1 job engine with predicted employment growth of 200,000 jobs until 2015. Healthcare embraces over 430 hospitals and 134 preventive and rehabilitation facilities with a total of 144,000 beds and around 150,000 employees. The state‘s six university clinics and the decentralized model at the Bochum university clinic with their 154 clinical departments and 35,300 employees are particularly noteworthy in this respect.
Medical technology in NRW is characterized largely by small and medium-sized enterprises. There are more than 180 medical technology companies employing 20 or more people. With approx. 9,300 employees these companies generated sales of more than 900 million euros in 2007. Well-known companies in NRW include 3M Medica, Brasseler, Medtronic, mnemoScience and Sarstedt. Nearly 50 pharmaceutical companies are based in NRW. They employ around 18,000 people and generate sales of over 5.5 billion euros. The largest companies include Bayer Health Care, Grünenthal, Janssen-Cilag, and Schwarz Pharma, each of which has over 1,000 employees.
