The information and communications technologies (ICT) are a mainstay and productivity and growth driver of the economy in NRW. The ICT industry is an important employment engine and a key player in the state's economy as a whole. Its economic importance goes far beyond its own sector. ICT trigger innovations in practically all industries, generate growth and create new, future-proof jobs. For NRW as an industrial location, ICT carry exceptional economic weight and strategy importance. More than 15,000 companies in the state employ around 140,000 people, generating total sales of more than 59 billion euros.
The ICT strength of NRW lies in the diversity of innovative locations. The Ruhr region, especially around Dortmund and Essen, stands out with regard to IT and software development in particular. More than 3,000 companies and around 38,000 employees work here in this future industry, including 780 companies with almost 12,000 employees in Dortmund alone. Telecommunications companies are extremely well represented in the Düsseldorf-Cologne-Bonn region along the Rhine. Nearly 90 percent of the cellular telephone market in Germany is covered by companies who are based here. Well known players include Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, E-Plus and Ericsson.
