With more than 133,000 employees, the stretch along the Rhine from Bonn to Düsseldorf is one of the most important regions for companies in the ICT industry. And one of Europe's leading ICT locations has developed over the past few years along the River Ruhr. In Westphalia, Dortmund plays an outstanding role in the field of information technology with 780 IT companies and nearly 12,500 employees.
The university landscape in NRW also strengthens the ICT industry in the state, with more and more large and small software firms setting up business around leading universities such as Dortmund, Aachen and Paderborn. Besides Deutsche Telekom AG, the largest German telecommunications provider, renowned multinational corporations have settled in NRW, including Vodafone, E-Plus and Ericsson. Almost 90 percent of the mobile phone market in Germany is covered by companies based in NRW.
