Logistics in NRW

NRW with its dense network of transportation routes is one of the central transportation hubs in Europe. Without a highly-developed logistics system, the national and international flow of transportation would not be manageable. The logistics sector is one of the leading growth industries in NRW. With 21,600 companies employing 274,000 people, it is one of the largest industries in NRW. Including the employees who perform logistical tasks in industrial and commercial enterprises, there are around 600,000 people working in the logistics industry. In addition, the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) in Dortmund is one of the world's largest research facilities in the field of logistics. Well-known industry players based in NRW include Deutsche Post DHL, FedEx, Fiege, Kühne&Nagel, NYK Logistics, Rhenus, Schenker and UPS.
