Fractions of millimeters are what count in microsystems technology (MST), a cross-section technology used in numerous industries. Nanotechnology (NT) is also a cross-section technology which not only flows into individual application areas, but – based on chemistry, physics, and biology – is also opening up completely new fields of application. A nanometer is roughly equivalent to one part of a hair split into 80,000.
NRW is one of the most important and biggest locations for MST in Germany. Regional concentrations are to be found in Dortmund, Aachen, and in the Ruhr region. The MST cluster in Dortmund numbers among the three largest clusters throughout Europe, with more than 40 companies employing around 2,300 people in total. Renowned MST and NT companies include: Bartels Mikrotechnik, ELMOS Semiconductor, Lissotschenko Mikrooptik (LIMO), ChemBiotech, and AMO.
