Bergisches Städtedreieck

The Wuppertal Suspension Railway

Wuppertal, Solingen and Remscheid form the Bergisches Städtedreieck (city triangle). It lies in central NRW between the Rhine and the Ruhr and describes itself as a "rural workshop region". 650,000 people live here on an area of 332.4 km² with an average population density of 1,939 inhabitants/km². 211,024 employees work at over 30,000 companies in the region.

Today the Bergisches Städtedreieck economic region concentrates on its special areas of expertise, namely automotive, event & communications, health & personal care, metal-working, and product design/development. However, traditional sectors such as the textile industry, tool-making, the cutting implement and cutlery industry, surface technology, and galvanization now also form focal points of the regional economy. Vorwerk, Zwilling, Solinger Klingen, and Erfurt Rauhfasertapete are just some of the well-known names from the region.

Besides the Bergische Universität Wuppertal with its 14,000 students, education and research are concentrated at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, and the Technical Academy Wuppertal. The focal areas of product design, metal-working, and tool-making reflect the core competences of the region here.

The Bergisches Städtedreieck has an excellent infrastructure. The A1, A3, and A46 freeways, nationwide ICE direct rail links, and the airports in Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn ensure first-rate transport connections.
