Lower Rhine

Schloss Moyland in Bedburg-Hau

The Lower Rhine region lies in the far west of North Rhine-Westphalia between the River Rhine and the Netherlands. A total of more than 2.5 million inhabitants live in the cities of Neuss, Krefeld, and Mönchengladbach, as well as the districts Kleve, Wesel, Viersen and Rhein-Kreis Neuss. With a total area of 3,950 km² the average population density is 633 inhabitants/km².

Nearly 120,000 companies are based in the region, providing work for over 700,000 employees. The wholesale trade, B2B services, chemicals, mechanical engineering, metal production and processing, logistics, the food industry, and the modern textile industry form the focal points of the economy in the Lower Rhine region. Over 60 percent of the gross domestic product is generated in services, while the manufacturing industry arrives at an export quota of 50 percent. Masterfoods, Nestlé Deutschland, Procter & Gamble, 3M, and Aluminium Norf are just some of the most well-known firms in the region. In addition, the Lower Rhine is an important center for Japanese companies in Germany, with Nissan, Canon, Hitachi, Daihatsu, Fuji, and Toshiba among the firms operating their headquarters here.

The Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences in Krefeld and Mönchengladbach, the technology centers and scientific institutes such as the Fraunhofer Institute of Microelectronic Circuits and Systems provide companies with good points of contact in research and development.

With a dense road and rail network, Düsseldorf International Airport, and the regional airports in Mönchengladbach and Weeze, trade and commerce are ensured an efficient infrastructure.
