The excellent infrastructure, the central location and the high qualifications of the people have made Germany's most populous state an economic power of international standing in its own right. In terms of numerous economic statistics, NRW is world class. The state's gross domestic product places it 17th in the world ranking immediately after the Netherlands.
Measured in terms of gross domestic product (GDP), NRW is the number one business location in Germany, generating 4.7 % (2004) of the European GDP (EU-25). The GDP of NRW is equivalent to 23.6 % of the GDP of China, 14.5 % of the GDP of Japan, and 4.8 % of the GDP of the USA (all figures refer to 2006).
