The total trading volume of North Rhine-Westphalia from imports and exports amounts to EUR 354.8 billion (2007). NRW's most important trading partner is the EU (25) with a trading volume of EUR 235.3 billion (2007).

18 percent of all goods exported from Germany are "Made in NRW". With an export volume of EUR 174.0 billion, North Rhine-Westphalia is 18th in the world, comparable to Spain and Taiwan.

With an import volume of almost EUR 180.8 billion, North Rhine-Westphalia is Germany's strongest import state. 23.3 percent of all German imports are delivered to NRW. The import volume of NRW is comparable to that of Singapore (192 EUR bn) and larger than that of Russia (163 EUR bn), Taiwan (160 EUR bn), India (158 EUR bn), Turkey (124 EUR bn), Australia (120 EUR bn), Austria (118 EUR bn) and Switzerland (117 EUR bn).
