Chinese company foundation boom continues

  • Number of Chinese companies in North Rhine-Westphalia up by 15 percent in 2007
  • Investment playing an increasingly important role

Düsseldorf, 6 February 2008 – To mark the Chinese New Year festival, NRW.INVEST GmbH is presenting its latest survey on the development of Chinese companies located in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2007. After the number of Chinese companies quadrupled in North Rhine-Westphalia in the period from 2003 to the end of 2006, the number of firms from the People's Republic of China also grew significantly in 2007 by 15 percent. Approx. 460 Chinese companies are now based in North Rhine-Westphalia. They employ approx. 2,500 people.

"North Rhine-Westphalia is therefore continuing to develop into one of the most important locations for Chinese companies in Europe", emphasizes NRW.INVEST managing director Petra Wassner. Düsseldorf and Cologne remain the top centers for Chinese investment. Nearly 75 percent of the firms have their headquarters here. With around 200 companies, Düsseldorf still clearly leads the field, ahead of Cologne with around 130. Many Chinese companies have also set up business in the Ruhr region.

Successful settlements in 2007 stem, for example, from the metal-producing and processing industry, as well as the telecommunications sector. The steel trading company Wisco Europe GmbH, a subsidiary of the Chinese Wuhan Iron & Steel (Group) Corporation, has located in Düsseldorf. In addition, the Chinese telecommunications company ZTE Corporation last year opened its German head office in the state capital, creating 30 new jobs. Both firms number among the top 30 companies in China.

China is becoming a major economic partner for North Rhine-Westphalia: the trade volume between North Rhine-Westphalia and the People's Republic totaled 18.5 billion euros in 2006. Of this figure, 6.1 billion euros were accounted for by export from North Rhine-Westphalia and 12.4 billion euros by imports to North Rhine-Westphalia.
