Press release from 07.04.2008
Düsseldorf/Gelsenkirchen, 7 April 2008 – For the eighth time, NRW.INVEST GmbH invited representatives of Nordic firms based in NRW to the Business Breakfast. Some 30 investors took up the invitation and came to the VELTINS Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen.
Peter E. Glaessel, managing director of NRW.INVEST GmbH, pointed out that there are about 400 Nordic companies based in North Rhine-Westphalia. These firms employ approx. 34,000 people and generate sales amounting to around 18 billion euros. "This puts the Nordic companies in fifth place among the foreign direct investors, with an investment volume of 8.2 billion euros", Glaessel emphasized.
Mayor Frank Baranowski and Gerhard Rehberg, Honorary President of the legendary soccer club FC Schalke 04, welcomed the guests in the "Blauer Salon" VIP lounge in Europa's most modern multi-purpose arena. "We are delighted to welcome the Nordic investors here at Schalke as our guests today", said Baranowski. Even though public discussion over the last few months has focused very much on Nokia, it is particularly the investors from the Nordic countries who contribute towards sustainable structural change in Gelsenkirchen and throughout the Ruhr region." Two examples of this are the Danish company BANTEX GmbH in Gelsenkirchen and the Norwegian firm Norske Skog Walsum in Duisburg with a total of around 600 employees. Schalke's honorary president Rehberg underlined: "No matter whether at the Veltins Biathlon World Team Challenge or in the Schalke soccer team – which includes Søren Larsen and Peter Løvenkrands – or at this morning's Business Breakfast, we are delighted to welcome our Nordic guests here, AufSchalke."
Guido Schneider, regional director of VICTORIA-Versicherungen, and Kristina Polzin, managing director of the Swedish management consultancy scandiSearch, explained what soccer, insurance and headhunting have in common and subsequently invited everyone present to join them for breakfast.
The event concluded with a guided tour of the VELTINS Arena AufSchalke and a sweepstake for a soccer shirt signed by the players of FC Schalke 04.
