Logistics in NRW

Thanks to an ideal set of conditions, the logistics industry is among the fastest growing business sectors in North Rhine-Westphalia. NRW ranks as one of Europe's major transportation hubs. The direct links with the Belgian and Dutch seaports and the dense transport network make NRW the leading logistics location in Europe. The volume of air freight is expanding continuously. Well-developed inland waterways offer direct access to destinations throughout Europe. Via the new Betuwe freight railroad NRW is now connected directly to Rotterdam, Europe's largest seaport.

Networks – Innovation transfer for a successful future

Under the umbrella of "EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr" more than 160 companies and 12 research institutes are in the process of developing new logistics technologies. The state cluster for logistics ("LogistikCluster NRW") has created specific platforms for logistics-related issues and promotes the practical application of research findings. The Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) in Dortmund is one of the world's largest research facilities in the field of logistics.

The Hub Of Innovation In The Ruhr Region Source: TZDO
The Westphalian metropolis of Dortmund is the biggest city of the Ruhr region, the logistical location of year 2012 of North Rhine-Westphalia, and German Soccer League champions many times over. And yet the list of laurels does not end here. The TechnologieZentrumDortmund that is housed here on more than 100,000 square metres of area makes it the biggest facility of its kind in Germany. The centre provides space, infrastructure and comprehensive support to technology oriented companies and entrepreneurs to develop their business ideas. To date about 280 companies with over 8,500 employees have been set up here - among them ELMOS Semiconductors or Vestas Wind Systems, famous names in their respective fields. The fields of technology in the ten centres of excellence of the TechnologieZentrumDortmund, founded in 1985, range from Information Technology and Logistics to Biomedicine, including Microtechnology and Nanotechnology. Production and Manufacturing Technology and Electric mobility are also represented here. Technological companies of Dortmund from unique fields like Microstructure or Laser Technology are regarded as drivers of innovation globally.
