NRW: Germany's leading business location

This is where the heart of the economy beats: The business location North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is Germany's most populous federal state. At around 670 billion euros, its approx. 17.6 million inhabitants generate more than a fifth of the total German GDP. 12 of the 40 largest German trading companies value the business location and have their headquarters here, e.g. Aldi, C&A, Deichmann, Metro, Rewe and Tengelmann. This concentration of economic strength opens up many new opportunities for investors.

Germany's leading economic region

With 669,7 billion euros, NRW generates 21.4 percent of the German GDP. This puts the state clearly ahead of all federal states. The GDP 2015 per capita stands at 36,509 euros and per employed person on average at 70,314 euros.


Europe's largest sales and procurement market

NRW is also a convincing business location when compared internationally. The federal state accounts for 4.4 percent of the European GDP (EU-28), making it one of the most important economic regions in Europe. In the international ranking, North Rhine-Westphalia is ahead of other European countries such as Turkey, Switzerland, Sweden, Poland and Belgium.


Trading volume of EUR 387 billion

The total trading volume of North Rhine-Westphalia from imports and exports is around 387 billion euros. The state's most important trading partner is the EU (EU-28) with a trade volume of 242 billion euros.


Export state NRW

14.9 percent of German exports are produced in NRW. In 2016, the total export value amounted to 180 billion euros. The main exports include chemical products, machinery, metals, motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Almost half of all exports go to seven key partner countries. These are the Netherlands, France, the UK, the USA, Belgium, China and Italy.


NRW is Germany's strongest import state

With an import volume of 207 billion euros, NRW is Germany's strongest import state. 21.5 percent of all German imports come to this important business location. The main imports are computer, motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, chemicals and chemical products, basic metals, machinery and equipment, oil and natural gas as well as food products. 57 percent of imports to North Rhine-Westphalia come from seven main supplier countries: the Netherlands, China, France, Belgium, Italy, the UK, Poland and the USA.
