Germany at its best: Nordrhein-Westfalen | Phoenix Contact

The Hermann monument near Detmold was erected in memory of the battle at the Teutoburg forest in 9 AD, which saw Germanic tribes defeat a Roman legion. At just under 54 m the tallest statue in Germany, it habitually attracts lightning, making it ideal for studying the time and intensity of lightning strikes on objects situated at a height. A measuring system now detects lightning strikes and analyses their steepness and energy.

The Lightning Monitoring System LM-S was developed by a company called Phoenix Contact, originally for continuous monitoring of wind turbines. LM-S measures the lightning strikes in the area, evaluates the data and informs the operator on-line, who can then promptly initiate corrective measures. This prevents expensive maintenance, while making power generation safer.

Phoenix Contact is gaining recognition for this innovation from many quarters. For example, Deutsche Messe AG honoured this global leader in electrical connection technology, based in Blomberg in East-Westphalia, with its famed Hermes Award in 2012.

Germany at its best: Nordrhein-Westfalen | RWTH Aachen University

RWTH Aachen University: In 1951, the Stanford University of California sold and leased academic spaces to industrial establishments with the offer of letting employees get training, pursue further education, and participate in studies and research projects of the university. Besides being a huge success, this decision laid the foundations for the creation of Silicon Valley.

Based on this model, one of the largest research sites in Europe is being developed on about 800,000 m² of campus space at RWTH Aachen University. The space will provide the infrastructure for up to 19 clusters to take up research. Companies and academic institutions will then, based on a new calibre of exchange, jointly take up holistic and interdisciplinary work on defined core research areas. They will have exclusive access to the technical facilities and training offers of the campus. This networking between authorities on science and commerce will give rise to hotspots of research, providing a unique opportunity for knowledge to be pooled and put into practice.

Germany at its best: Nordrhein-Westfalen | Saertex

Cut to Saerbeck, Westphalia: the year is 1982 and SAERTEX is setting out to combine its production know-how on textile surfaces with a path breaking concept to develop and manufacture industrial textiles from a mix of glass fibre, carbon and aramide. What follows is a success story! Mechanical resistances differ depending on the fibre type, surface load, angle combination and direction. The Non Crimp Fabrics (NCF) obtained in this way for the composites industry to make extremely resilient components in aircrafts, bridges, ships and cars are considerably lighter than conventional materials.

Innovative composites made by SAERTEX play a key role, for instance, in the wings of the world's biggest carrier aircraft, the Airbus A380.

The growth in demand can also be put down to the booming wind energy sector. Today, the SAERTEX Group is a global player with 8 subsidiaries in 7 countries, spread over 4 continents, but the Muensterland headquarters of this pioneering company remains the centre of operations. All departments the world over are controlled from here.
