Well-developed inland waterways offer direct access to destinations throughout Europe. Via the new Betuwe freight railroad NRW is now connected directly to Rotterdam, Europe's largest seaport.

Networks – Innovation transfer for a successful future
Under the umbrella of "EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr" more than 600 scientists working in 180 companies as well as 20 research and education institutes are in the process of developing new logistics technologies. The state cluster for logistics ("Kompetenznetz Logistik.NRW") has created specific platforms for logistics-related issues and promotes the practical application of research findings. The Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) in Dortmund is one of the world's largest research facilities in the field of logistics.
